A year has passed since Ben Holiday bought the Kingship of Landover from the wizard Meeks, who set a series of pitfalls to trap him. Ben survived with the help of Questor Thews, an ill-trained wizard; Abernathy, talking dog and Court Scribe; and Willow, fairy and sometimes tree. Now, Ben is troubled by dreams regarding his former partner, Miles Bennett. Yet, when Ben returns to Earth, Miles is doing fine. The dreams are a trap used by Meeks as a means to return to Landover. The first night back Meeks springs the trap, and apparently takes the medallion that gives Ben the right to the throne. Ben becomes an outcast, unrecognized, and seemingly powerless. Only the strange prism cat seems to know the truth, and now Willow is missing seeking a creature of legend--the Black Unicorn. Ben must find both the truth, and the magic of the elusive unicorn to reclaim the throne.
