So she moves her school to neutral ground into a sod house on the prairie. She comes to care deeply for her students and their parents, all resolutely fighting to eke out a living from the harsh land. Susanna is drawn to two men, Matt Rawdon, a doctor, and Ase McCanless, a rancher. Through her compassion and love Susanna helps to create a solid community.
